Wags To Riches-Bobe Cannon

21 Mar

Bob Cannon, along with Pat Matthews and Michael Lah, is one of my all-time favorite animators. He’s an excellent draftsman and I love his use of smeared inbetweens (is that what they’re called?). I’ve been practicing drawing from his scenes in Tex Avery’s “Wags To Riches” and thought I’d share some screenshots along with a clip of the actual scene.

Thanks for the post. Excellent use of the frame grabs, and they pay off so well when you see the clip.

Luv Bobe Cannon’s animation. The fact that Spike comes out relatively unscathed by the explosion while the rest of the <>building<> is now smouldering is hilarious too.

Great clip and screenshots. I love how poor Spike gets blown up THREE TIMES… and the square eyes!

Glad everyone liked the post. I love the sound FX when the cigar and lighter explode. I don’t think it would have as much punch with a louder/bigger explosion. Everyone of Bobe’s drawings are amazing.

Kevin,Forgot to mention this, but yes, that’s called “smear” animation. Bobe Cannon and Virgil Ross in particular specialized in it.

Great post! Sometimes studying the frame by frame of “funny character” animation pays off.

And these MGM animators were at the top of their games.

    Thanks for sharing!
