MGM Cartoon Studio 1956

10 Apr

Art Lozzi was kind enough to send me this a while back. The drawing is by Ben Shenkman and yes that’s “The” Jack Nicholson in the upper right hand corner. I believe he was the office gopher at the time. I love the Michael Lah and Robert Gentle caricatures the best. Thanks Art!

Tex had completed his last cartoons at MGM in 1953, though they weren’t released until two years later.

Ben Shenkman, who drew this picture, was once regarded as the best caricaturist in California. By the late 1970’s he had grown tired of doing faces and was drawing people from the back, yet still getting across most adroitly who they were.

Ben Shenkman is my great-uncle but being on the east coast we didn’t get to know him other than through legend, does anyone have more cartoons by him or more info?
