Shamus Culhane – "Jungle Jive"

13 Nov

Here’s a clip from “Jungle Jive”, directed by Shamus Culhane. I’m very fond of the Lantz Swing Symphonies series even though they’re not loaded with a ton of gags. I particularly love the ones that Culhane made with Art Heinemann as his layout/color stylist. The simplified, flat colored backgrounds are unlike what was being done in most other cartoons at the time.

I didn’t know Jetix actually showed Walt Lantz cartoons. Anyways, I love the combinination of the great timing, loose animation (I definitely saw some Pat Matthews animation here and there), and those Darrell Calker big band scores.

You know, I think this may be one of the few black caricature cartoons with the absence of the usual big lips.Great music and animation! Go Shamus!

I downloaded this a long time ago and it’s overdubbed in spanish. I’m assuming it’s from a South American station. I haven’t seen this one on TV since the very early 90s. If there’s another Woody set I hope that the rest of Culhane’s shorts are included.

I love the BGs in this one. It’ll be a great inspiration for the upcoming layout week…And the music is great.

I saw the full clips recently on one of the cartoon networks, and I was really impressed by the piano tune. Would anyone happen to have the full clip, or know where I could find it?
