Famous Studios – "The Voice Of The Turkey"

20 Nov

Here’s a Thanksgiving themed cartoon, the 1950 short “The Voice Of The Turkey”. I really love Famous Studios cartoons. I know a large percentage of them rely heavily on the same story formulas for each character but I’ve always loved the animation, the backgrounds, music and voice acting. The backgrounds in this short are really great and were painted by Tom Ford, one of my favorites from any studio.

I love the shameless steal of Avery’s “character runs off the projected film” gag. I believe this was Bill Tytla’s last cartoon for Famous.

I found that this short made me crave turkey dinner that much more. I did find the scene where the farmers eyes pop out of his head, then the eyeballs continue to seperate and then go back together into his head to be a nice change from the typical eye popping out of the skull! I also thought that the characters running off the film has been done before and thanks to Thad I realize this is one of Tex Avery’s original ideas! But it still adds character to the clip.

Good cartoon! I’m very much the same for Famous Studio’s cartoons – admire the voices and their fab animation. I’ve a feeling, though, that Cal Mayer *might* have written this cartoon; despite it having no credits, I slightly recognise the wild humour here. That ending almost gave me a heart attack!BTW, that eye gag, I think, was used as well in a few Columbia Screen Gems Cartoons too, when Bob Clampett took charge of the studio. “Up n’Atom”, comes to mid.
