"Pluto’s Blue Note"

I’m a sucker for Pluto cartoons. There’s always a great walk cycle or two in them. In this case there’s a really great dance scene with Pluto. This one was nominated for an Academy Award in 1948.

I personally never cared for any of Charles Nichols’ shorts with Pluto at all, but I think there was a decent Pluto before Nichols came in once in a while (Bone Trouble, Army Mascot, Canine Caddy).

Sorry, but I’m disappointed that Pluto would resort to lip-synching. Granted that Mickey, Donald, and Goofy <>all<> did this in their talkies. But I would have hoped that Pluto wouldn’t stoop to it.

I don’t really care for the Pluto cartoons either (‘cept for some of the earlier ones), but the animation is awesome in all of them, especially in cartoons like this one.I think Pluto’s dance in this cartoon is probably my favorite piece of Pluto animation, not only because of the timing & movement, but because of that silly expression on Pluto’s face. What’s with the horse teeth?

Technically well done – but needed funnier gags at the end. To make up for the lack of humor, I went and watched this Tex Avery classic from the same year: “Little Tinker” http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1vwyn_tex-averylittle-tinker_funThanks for posting Pluto though. He was one of my favorites early on.

See, for me the animation is what sucks me in. True it’s not very funny though a lot of Disney shorts aren’t. Though Donald and Goofy crack me up sometimes. Like Mike, I love Pluto’s dance scene in this cartoon. The retarded expression makes the scene.

This raises the question: Does a cartoon have to be funny to be consider a good cartoon? My answer and opinion is no and this cartoon is a good example. It makes me really mad of the many times when cartoons get bashed at least one a month from both the foarm and some certain blogs (I’m not refering to this blog). Granted, it’s not really funny, but I can see why it was nominated for an Oscar. The storyline is okay and it’s has great facial expressions. Plus, it was even referenced in one the later animated features from about seven years ago. There’s a reason why I consider the Disney cartoons to be second favorite/ favorite studio shorts, next to Warners, of course.

What an inspiring one! Pluto’s musicality, til the point where he is literally melting to the music – can’t get enough of it. My favorite is when Pluto gets really hung-up in his double-shuffles at 4:35 (or, quadruple-shuffles…god, I wanna have four legs, too!). Thanks a lot!
